How to Stop the Windows Update Service and Important Considerations

The Windows Update service (service name: wuauserv) detects, downloads, and installs updates for Windows and other programs. Although you can stop or disable it from services.msc, Microsoft recommends Group Policy and Registry Policy as the official way to manage automatic updates in current Windows.

If you want to prevent permanent kiosks, digital signage, or unattended information terminals from updating or restarting during business hours, first set up Windows Update policies. Treat stopping wuauserv as a temporary operation on a special terminal that lets you isolate the failure and verify the impact.

Things to check before stopping wuauserv

wuauserv If you disable it, not only Windows Update but also programs that use the Windows Update Agent (WUA) API will not be able to use the update function. It also affects security updates, quality updates, feature updates, and driver updates.

Check the following before proceeding:

• Work with a maintenance account with administrator privileges
• Record the current "startup type" and service status
• Make sure Windows Update or updates are not being installed
• Check the impact on a test machine before deploying to production devices
• Decide when the next update will be made, who will be in charge of it, and how it will be restored.
• Check the group policy and MDM policy on the organization management terminal

Stopping a service during the update process may cause the update to fail or require a repair operation after a restart. Please make sure that no processing is displayed on the Windows Update settings screen.

Control automatic updates with policies

Microsoft does not advise stopping or disabling the Windows Update service, which was done in previous versions of Windows, as a supported method of disabling automatic updates today. In Windows 11, by setting the "Configure automatic updates" policy to Disabled, you can stop automatic updates while leaving manual updates made by the administrator.

Disabling wuauserv alone does not mean you can safely manage all mechanisms related to Windows Update. Disabling multiple services or tasks at the same time is also not recommended, as it may damage the update infrastructure or fail to restore it.

Open services.msc

Open with "Run"

1. Press Win + R.

2. Enter services.msc and click OK.

You can also open the same list by right-clicking the Start button, opening Computer Management, and selecting Services and Applications → Services.

Check Windows Update service

Find "Windows Update" in the list of services and double-click it to open its properties.

Record the "Startup Type" and "Service Status" before making changes. Please do not assume that a specific value such as "Manual" is the original setting, as the settings may differ depending on the Windows version and device management status.

Pause wuauserv

If you want to temporarily stop the update to isolate a problem, etc., select "Stop" on the "General" tab of "Windows Update Properties".

If you are unable to stop the service, or if it starts again after being stopped, a Windows update component or your organization's administrative settings may be at play. Don't forcefully disable related services or tasks one after another, check the policies in place.

After pausing, select "Start" to resume after completing the necessary checks.

If you want to disable the startup type

If you want to stop the service from starting after verifying the impact, select "Disabled" from "Startup Type" and select "Stop" if the service is running.

After selecting Apply, make sure the following conditions are present:

• Startup type: Disabled
• Service status: stopped

This setting is not recommended as a maintenance method for Windows Update. The images are for confirmation of the operation details and do not indicate the values that should be set on all kiosks.

Things to check after setting

If you stop or disable a service, check the following:

1. Does not affect the operation of display apps or peripheral devices
2. Services can be restored when Windows Update needs to be run manually
3. Understand the impact on Microsoft Store and other update features
4. You can check for unapplied warnings in Security Monitor.
5. The next maintenance date and time and restoration steps are recorded.
6. Even after restarting, the service status remains as per the operational design.

How to restore wuauserv

1. In services.msc, open the properties of "Windows Update".
2. Change the "Startup type" back to the value you recorded before.
3. Select Apply.
4. Select Start if necessary.
5. Restart Windows.
6. Check for updates from the Windows Update settings screen.

If you have not recorded the original value, do not simply reuse the value from another terminal; instead, check the Windows version and your organization's management policy. If the service cannot start, follow the Windows Update troubleshooting steps.

Summary

Stopping or disabling wuauserv will affect Windows Update detection, download, and installation, as well as programs that utilize the Windows Update Agent. Disabling services to control automatic updates is not currently a Microsoft-supported way to manage Windows.

For kiosks and digital signage, prioritize group policies or the NoAutoUpdate policy, using configurations that let administrators update during maintenance windows. When operating a service, you should basically isolate it temporarily, and be sure to record the state before the change and how to restore it.
