Blender | How to Make Clouds
- Blender
Prerequisites
Blender: v4.0.2
These are my own notes from when I made clouds.
Contents
1. Add Any Mesh

2. Add a Modifier
- Add a Subdivision Surface with a level of 4 (adjust to taste).
Shape it in Edit Mode. - Add Displace.

Add a new texture from Displace’s New button and change its Type to Cloud.

This gives you the result below — reset the Scale and apply Shade Smooth.

I set the parameters as shown below (adjust to taste).

3. Add a Volume
Add Volume > Empty via shift + a.

4. Add a Modifier to the Volume
First, add Mesh to Volume to convert the object we added earlier into a Volume.

Next, add Volume Displace to shape the Volume.

Add a Cloud texture and adjust the parameters to taste.

Add another Displace to fine-tune the finer details.

Change the resolution from 32 to 128 to increase the detail at render time.

While I was at it, I also adjusted the object’s shape in Edit Mode.

5. Add a Material

6. Add a Sun Light

7. Rendering
I duplicated the cloud I made earlier and adjusted its shape.
Increasing the Voxel amount resolution should bring it closer to realistic (depending on what your PC can handle…).
