Blender | Trying Out Bone Animation

🦴
  • Blender

Prerequisites

These are my own personal notes from when I tried out bone animation. 🙇‍♀️

Blender: v4.0.2

1. Preparation

Enable the rigging add-on.

2. Add a Bone

Add it via shift + a and match the bone’s size.

3. Match the Skeleton in Pose Mode

Switch to Edit Mode with tab.
Enable X-axis mirror in the top right of the screen.
Move the round parts of the bones to fit the skeleton.

4. Link the Object and the Bones

5. Adjust the Weights for the Range of Motion

First, change the culling settings so you can see the bones from the front, even in Material Preview.

Change the paint setting to gradient.
Setting the weight value to 0 bases it around blue, and 1 bases it around red.

6. Set Up the Animation

With the bone chosen, switch to Pose Mode.
It’s easier if you enable auto keyframe insertion.

Once you’ve keyed everything, open the Timeline editor while the bone object is chosen in Pose Mode, and choose all of that bone object’s keyframes.
From there, use shift + e to create a modifier that loops the animation to fit the timeline length.

That completes the bone animation.
